Forestry Mulching 101: What It Is, What It Costs and When to Use It

What Is Forestry Mulching?

Forestry mulching is land clearing with one machine. A tracked carrier with a mulching head grinds standing brush, briars, vines, saplings and small trees into mulch and leaves it on the ground where it fell. There are no burn piles, no chipper and no debris trucks.

Stumps are ground to grade rather than pulled, and the roots stay in the soil. That keeps the ground stable, and the mulch layer protects it from rain while it breaks down over the following year or two.

What It Clears

Underbrush, privet, honeysuckle, multiflora rose, briars, saplings and trees up to about 14 inches in diameter in a single pass. Larger trees are felled first and the material is mulched on site. Trees you want to keep stay standing; we walk the property with you and flag them before we start.

Forestry Mulching Compared With Dozing and Burning

A bulldozer pushes vegetation, stumps and topsoil into piles, which then have to be burned or hauled, and it leaves bare ground that washes in the next heavy rain. Burning needs piles, dry weather and attention. Forestry mulching leaves the soil and root mat where they are and covers the ground with mulch instead.

Dozing is still the right call when you need the roots out: a foundation, a driveway base or ground that is about to be graded. For reclaiming an overgrown lot, opening a pasture, a fence row or a trail, mulching is usually the simpler job.

What It Costs

For the first visit, forestry mulching runs $1,500 to $3,500 per acre for the first visit: light quarter-acre lots at the low end, heavily dense and steep one-acre lots at the high end. What the Ground Looks Like Afterwards

Right after the job you have open, walkable ground under a layer of mulch. Some species resprout from the roots, so plan on mowing or a follow-up pass where regrowth matters; how much comes back depends on the species and the site. Mulched ground seeds well once it is open.
